Single-Use Plastics Bans set for Victoria – Is Your Business Ready?

The Victorian Government has been working closely with the National Retail Association to help businesses and organisations understand and get ready for the upcoming ban on Single-Use Plastics across the state.

From 1 February 2023, single-use plastics will be banned from sale or supply. This ban applies to single-use plastic drinking straws, cutlery, plates, drink stirrers and cotton bud sticks made from conventional, degradable, and compostable plastics. The ban also applies to food service items and drink containers made from expanded polystyrene.

South Australia set the standard in this space introducing their ban 1 March 2021 on single-use plastic straws, drink stirrers and cutlery. In November 2022, the Australian Marine Conservation Society reported that seven out of eight Australian states and territories have now made the commitment to introduce these bans. However, with each jurisdiction committing to ban different product type it can be a little confusing. You can download a report card from their website to see which state or territory is leading the charge.

Vic.Gov.Au have a range of free resources on their website such as guides, posters, and postcards to help prepare businesses for the upcoming changes. There’s even a free live information session for businesses and organisations every Friday at 11am. These weekly online sessions are for retailers, hospitality, suppliers, manufacturers, or other businesses impacted by the ban.
